ATTRI Series
ASTM d5757

Any powder, when moved, is subjected to attrition phenomena, leading to undesirable fines formation.  Measuring attrition resistance is therefore essential, in particular for powders used as catalysts in fluidized bed and slurry reactors.

functionality

ATTRI-AS/MFC is an instrument for measuring the attrition resistance of any type of powder. It is based on the air jet principle and strictly complies with the ASTM standard method ASTM D5757. However, it can also be used following different procedures. Typical powders to be measured are in the range of 10 – 180 micrometers.

components

Attrition Tube

A special stainless steel attrition tube stresses the powder by high-speed air jets, coming from precision-drilled sub-millimeter nozzles, providing an accelerated simulation of the attrition phenomenon occurring in reality during a period of months.

Glass-made Settling Chamber

Ahead of the attrition tube, a glass-made settling chamber allows to see the powder during treatment. Both the air pressure and the flow rate measurement instruments are located before the attrition tube.

Fines Collection Filter

Located on top of the glass settling chamber, the disposable filtering unit retains the finer dusts. The percentage loss of fines after a specified time of treatment gives measurement of the attrition resistance.

Mass Flow Controller (MFC)

Accurate measurement of the air flow, compliant with CE specifications and ASTM D5757.

WATER SATURATOR

Located ahead of the attrition tube, the air flow can be humidified through a water saturator.

application note

The ASTM Procedure

The ASTM standard method ASTM D5757 has been primary designed for catalysts, but can also be effectively applied to other powdered materials in the 10- 180 micrometers size range. The standard amount of material to be tested is 50 grams and the standard air flow rate to be used is 600 l/h.

The official text describing the method can be found at www.astm.org

Catalyst Pretreatment
For FCC catalysts the ASTM standard method ASTM D5757 recommends pretreating at 565ºC and subsequent addition of 10% water by weight. For other types of powder, the pretreatment is to be chosen case by case. MaTec specialists will provide full assistance on the issue.
Problems arising from low attrition resistance of catalysts
  • Excessive catalyst consumption in fluid bed reactors.
  • Difficult catalyst filtration in slurry reactors.
  • Loss of powder after pneumatic conveying (any type of powder).
